Understanding the Causes of Engine Starting Failures

Understanding the Causes of Engine Starting Failures

Arriving late in the morning, missing important work, or breaking down while driving are just some of the repercussions of a vehicle that won't start. So what are the causes of this issue? What are the solutions?

What causes a vehicle to not start?

1. Some reasons why a vehicle won’t start

1.1 Not retracting the kickstand

For some current scooter models, the kickstand is designed as a "lock" that must be retracted. If the kickstand is not fully retracted, the vehicle won’t start. Although this is an extremely simple reason, many people overlook it. Therefore, if your vehicle suddenly won’t start, be sure to check the kickstand thoroughly and try again afterwards.

Not fully retracting the kickstand can prevent the vehicle from starting.

1.2 Dead battery

When starting the vehicle, if you hear the engine sound gradually fading, the starting sound is not as powerful as usual, and it may not start, there’s a chance the battery is dead.

Another way to identify this condition is by listening to the horn and the indicator lights. If the horn sounds weak and the headlights, dashboard lights, rear lights, and turn signals are dim, the battery is likely weak or dead and needs to be replaced.

In this case, you should not attempt to start repeatedly, but instead, turn off the key to let the engine rest for 3-5 minutes. There’s a high chance the battery may regain some charge. However, if it still won’t start, follow these steps:

  • Find a battery with a charge
  • Connect the corresponding terminals (negative to negative, positive to positive)
  • After connecting the power, try to start the vehicle again.

This is a last-resort solution. If it still doesn’t work, consider visiting a repair shop to replace or charge the battery.

A dead battery is also a reason why a vehicle won't start.

1.3 Effects of winter weather

Low temperatures reduce the evaporation of fuel. This results in a mixture of fuel and air that lacks sufficient density, which is commonly referred to as a "lean" mixture. The fuel-to-air ratio and carburetor air adjustment directly affect the vehicle's ability to start.

Some ways to address the issue of a vehicle not starting due to cold temperatures include:

  • Do not twist the throttle as this
