Understanding Specially Formulated Engine Oil for European Automobiles Equipped with Emission Control Systems

European automobiles are increasingly popular in the Vietnamese market. However, due to stringent emissions requirements and technical standards, these vehicles require specially formulated lubricants to ensure optimal engine performance. So what makes the technical specifications and oil capacity of lubricants designed specifically for European vehicles unique? Let's explore the following article to find the most accurate answers!

Imported European vehicles require specially formulated lubricants to maximize their intended performance and functionality
1. Why do European imported vehicles require specialized lubricants?
Strict lubricant requirements from manufacturers
For automobiles in other markets, manufacturers typically only recommend vehicle owners use lubricants meeting general technical standards applicable across the industry (such as API SP). However, in Europe, each manufacturer has specific requirements for engine oil.
For example, certain VW models are recommended to use premium 0W-20 motor oil meeting technical standards 508 00 / 509 00. Meanwhile, lubricants for Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, and others have different requirements.
Strict emissions standards
The European Union has implemented numerous emissions requirements to limit CO, NOx, and PM emissions. Currently, the emissions standard being applied by the EU is Euro 6 (since 2015) with a NOx emissions limit of 0.08 g/km. Soon, Europe will continue developing the Euro 7 standard (expected to be implemented in 2025) to further reduce NOx emissions to 0.03 g/km.

Europe has very strict emissions standards
To meet these strict EU standards, vehicles must use particulate filters and catalytic converters to reduce emissions. However, sulfate ash, sulfur, and phosphorus (SAPS) content in motor oils damage the vehicle's emissions control system. Therefore, most European vehicles require low-SAPS lubricants.
Longer oil change intervals
European vehicle engines are designed to travel approximately 16,000 km before requiring an oil change. This helps reduce oil costs, which are quite expensive in Europe. Due to longer oil change intervals, European vehicles require engine lubricants with excellent resistance to wear and sludge buildup over extended periods.
