Zinc compounds are a common additive in modern automotive engine oils
1. The Impact of Zinc on Engine Oil
As mentioned in the introduction of this article, the zinc used in engine oils is not pure zinc but rather zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) or zinc dithiophosphate (ZDTP) compounds. If you are using mineral-based engine oil, it will contain ZDDP components. Synthetic engine oils typically contain ZDTP compounds.
These zinc compounds are primarily used for anti-wear protection of the engine. ZDDP/ZDTP in automotive engine oils can help prevent peroxide formation, minimizing corrosion of camshafts and bearings during high-pressure operation.
Additionally, ZDDP or ZDTP creates a protective coating on the surface of metal components, helping protect the engine against wear and extreme pressure. Thanks to these outstanding characteristics, zinc compounds have become common additives in engine oil and lubricant products.

ZDDP/ZDTP zinc compounds help engine oil increase anti-wear protection
Furthermore, with the advantage of low cost, using ZDDP/ZDTP (instead of other anti-wear additives) also contributes to reducing automotive engine oil prices. Nowadays, many corporations in North America and Europe such as Exxon Mobil, Chevron, and Lubrizol are producing ZDDP on a large scale.
According to expert assessment, ZDDP/ZDTP zinc compounds are very beneficial for vehicles with flat-tappet camshafts and aged engines. Oil with high zinc ratios is typically used for high-performance automobile engines.
However, despite its effective anti-wear capabilities, ZDDP/ZDTP still has certain issues that negatively
