1. Function and Effects

The power generation process of motorcycles originates from the engine, during which the internal components operate continuously. These components are made of metal, so their movement creates friction and leads to an increase in temperature.

Lubricants play an essential role in the operation of motorcycles.

At this time, lubricants help to lubricate the internal parts to eliminate friction. When friction occurs, heat is generated, commonly referred to as dry running. This phenomenon is very dangerous, as greater friction results in higher temperatures, which could lead to explosions.

Additionally, the friction between metal components in the engine during operation causes them to wear against each other. If this condition persists, it will damage these components, leading to significant repair costs.

2. Viscosity Index

Viscosity is an important parameter used to classify lubricants. The viscosity index will indicate how the lubricant flows at a specified temperature (the standard measurement temperatures are 40 degrees Celsius and 100 degrees Celsius). The higher this index, the thicker the lubricant and the better the ability to reduce friction when the oil heats up. However, this does not mean that higher viscosity oils (thick oils) are better than lower viscosity oils (thin oils).

Viscosity should be considered when choosing lubricant.

Thicker oils flow more slowly through the engine's gaps, so when starting in cold weather or when the engine is cold (in the morning), the oil may not reach the internal components quickly enough. If the motorcycle is started immediately, excessive friction may occur, leading to wear and heat generation. Therefore, high viscosity oils are typically used for older vehicles and should be allowed to idle for a while before driving.

In contrast, thinner oils or oils with lower viscosity will flow more quickly. Thin oils are usually used for new vehicles and vehicles that make short trips within the city.

Based on viscosity, there are currently two types on the market: multi-viscosity oils (multi-grade) and single-grade oils. Multi-grade oils are designated in the format xWy, for
