Is Pour Point Really Important for Motorcycle Engine Oil?

Before launching products to the market, all lubricant products undergo laboratory sampling to test their characteristics. And pour point (freezing point) is one of them. So what is the significance of this parameter? Is it really important for motorcycle oil in Vietnam? Before hitting the shelves, all lubricant products must be tested for pour point in the laboratory

1. Why do many people often overlook pour point when choosing lubricants?

First, let's gain a basic understanding of the concept of pour point (freezing point).

1.1. What is pour point/freezing point?

According to the Vietnamese National Standard TCVN 3753:2011, pour point is defined as follows: The pour point of a petroleum oil product is the lowest temperature at which the movement of the test sample can be observed under specified conditions.

Pour point is the lowest temperature at which we can observe lubricant movement

Simply put, pour point is the lowest temperature at which lubricant can still be observed moving. This characteristic indicates the ability of motorcycle oil to function under low temperature conditions.

1.2. Why many people overlook pour point when choosing lubricants

On product packaging, few manufacturers prominently display the pour point specification. It is usually included as a detail in the manufacturer's technical specification sheet. For this reason, many customers are not even aware of the existence of pour point.

Furthermore, Vietnam is located in a humid tropical monsoon climate zone that is not uniform. Its territory falls within the tropical belt of the Northern Hemisphere, leaning more toward the Tropic of Cancer than the equator. As a result, Vietnam's average annual temperature is quite high and has shown an increasing trend in recent years, according to statistics from the Central Meteorological and Hydrological Station.

Therefore, pour point is not really necessary for motorcycle oil in Vietnam. For example, if you are in the southern region and need to change your motorcycle oil in Binh Duong, you don't need to be overly concerned about pour point. The average temperature in this area reaches 26-27°C.

2. When should you pay attention to pour point?
