1. Understanding how to choose oil for motorcycles correctly
In Vietnam, motorcycles are the most common means of transportation, easy to control, reasonably priced, and suitable for the roads and traffic systems. To keep your motorcycle running smoothly, with a powerful engine and a long lifespan, you should choose the right quality oil product.
So how can you know what type of oil your motorcycle needs? Here are some considerations:
- First, choose motorcycle oil according to the viscosity level printed on the product packaging.
Currently, motorcycle oils on the market can be distinguished based on two viscosity grades after the SAE label on the sticker. For Motul oil, these designations include: SAE 10W40, SAE 5W40, SAE 20W50, etc.
Based on these specifications, you will know the viscosity of your motorcycle oil as follows:
- The first number before the W (for example, 10 in 5W40) indicates the standard viscosity of the product at low temperatures, as well as its performance in cold weather. If this number is smaller, the oil will withstand lower temperatures. Thus, using this product, you won’t have to worry about engine stalls or difficulties starting your vehicle on cold mornings.

- The number after the W (for example, 20 in 20W50) indicates the oil's performance at high temperatures. This number usually reflects the oil's capability to lubricate and protect the engine when it is running. The higher the number, the greater the viscosity.
You should keep in mind that different motorcycle models will have different ways of selecting oil; for example, popular Motul oils for motorcycles are SAE 10W40, 20W40, 15W40, or 20W50. For scooters, you should choose oils with viscosity grades of SAE 10W30, 5W40, 10W40, or 15W40, etc.
