How to Replace Your Motorcycle Battery at Home

How to Replace Your Motorcycle Battery at Home

For motorcycles, the battery plays an important role. It stores electrical energy for the engine to operate. However, after a period of use, the battery may weaken or become damaged. Therefore, it is necessary to replace the motorcycle battery in a timely manner to ensure better performance and to minimize any potential risks while using the vehicle.

Let's explore more information about batteries with Huỳnh Châu in the article below!

1. What is the role of a motorcycle battery?

The battery is considered the second power source for motorcycles, storing electrical energy to power components such as the starter, horn, and lights. Additionally, the battery helps stabilize voltage during the operation of the vehicle.

It can be recharged or replaced; however, its lifespan is limited, so replacing the motorcycle battery with a new one will allow the vehicle and its systems to operate better and more durably compared to merely recharging it.

2. Types of motorcycle batteries

In the market, there are two types of batteries commonly used for motorcycles: dry batteries and wet batteries.

2.1. Dry batteries

Dry batteries consist of a gas state structure and are used with components that have good conductivity, resulting in lower resistance compared to wet batteries. This type of battery has a strong power transmission capability, providing electrical energy for the starter engine quickly and maintaining charge even when the engine runs for extended periods.

Thanks to their fast and strong electric transmission, dry batteries can retain their charge for a long time without needing to be recharged or jump-started. They are known for their high durability, compact design, ease of use, and can be replaced at home.

2.2. Wet batteries

Wet batteries use lead plates and diluted sulfuric acid. This solution is considered the electrolyte that releases energy for the wet battery. This type of battery typically has a voltage of 12V and is often used for motorcycles. Inside the battery, there are six compartments, each corresponding to one individual battery cell connected via negative (-) and positive (+) terminals.

During use, due to chemical reactions, the sulfuric acid solution gradually depletes, and the lead plates corrode, resulting in a relatively short lifespan of about two years for wet batteries.
