Essential Guide to CVT Continuously Variable Transmissions

Essential Guide to CVT Continuously Variable Transmissions

Most modern vehicles manufactured recently are equipped with CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) transmissions. Because this transmission has the ability to continuously change the transmission ratio without dividing into discrete gear steps. So what is a CVT transmission, how does it operate, and which CVT transmission fluid should be used appropriately for different vehicle types? Let's explore this information with Huynh Chau in the following article!

1. Overview of CVT Continuously Variable Transmission

1.1. What is CVT Continuously Variable Transmission?

CVT transmission, an abbreviation for Continuously Variable Transmission, is a type of transmission capable of continuously changing the transmission ratio without dividing into discrete gear steps like 4, 5, or 6-speed transmissions. CVT transmission operates based on a belt system and 2 pulley systems instead of using gears like conventional transmissions.

1.2. Meaning of CVT Transmission Symbols

CVT transmission has symbols quite similar to automatic AT transmissions. You can refer to some common symbols below:

  • P: This is the parking mode and you should only use it when the vehicle is completely stationary.
  • R: Reverse mode to back the vehicle into a parking space or desired stopping position.
  • N: Neutral mode (also called gear 0), the transmission will disconnect the engine from the transmission, used to push or pull the vehicle more conveniently.
  • D: Drive mode with forward gears D1, D2, D3, this is the most frequently used mode when driving.
  • M+/-: Manual mode, allowing the driver to upshift or downshift manually.
  • S+/-: Sport mode, allowing the driver to shift gears as in sports driving.
  • L: Low gear mode, with strong braking effect, commonly used when going uphill/downhill or when the vehicle needs heavy loading.
