1. Common damages to motorcycle forks

The shock absorber system or fork system of the motorcycle often suffers from damage "silently." Therefore, when you notice it, this component is already significantly damaged and needs to be completely replaced. This is why you need to pay more attention to your bike's forks during usage.

The timing for replacing motorcycle forks is quite important, directly affecting the vehicle's performance. Depending on the level of usage and the terrain, the replacement time will vary.

However, you should base your replacement on some typical signs for proactive maintenance. Some common faults of motorcycle forks include:

  • When hitting a pothole, the rear of the bike bounces, causing instability

You can identify hydraulic oil leakage resulting from a worn seal by observing a wet layer of oil rust at the bottom of the shock absorber or hearing a clunking sound while passing over potholes creating a bouncing sensation.

For the front shocks, you can easily replace seals and oil thanks to the removable construction of the cylinder and piston. When filling the fork oil, be sure to use the correct type and quantity of oil needed. If the shocks remain too stiff even after oil replacement, this indicates that the oil capacity exceeds the specified limit. In this case, you need to release excess oil using the drain screw located at the base of the shock absorber.

There are many signs to identify damaged motorcycle forks.

  • The forks make clunking sounds during operation

The sounds of "clunking," "creaking" are among the most recognizable signs of damaged bike forks. This phenomenon occurs due to various reasons such as:

  • Bent shock absorber
  • Rusty springs
  • Friction between the cylinder body and the protective tube

For female models that use standard shock absorbers, the forks may have lost oil, become worn, or even the hydraulic rod has bent due to strong impacts or vibrations.

  • When riding, if the handlebars are unbalanced, it could mean that one side's spring is broken or bent.
