What is Engine Knock and Why is it Important?
Knock is uncontrolled ignition and explosion of hydrocarbon fuel, such as gasoline, in the combustion chamber. It produces a knocking or pinging noise, robs the engine of power and, if left uncontrolled, causes serious engine damage. The knock tendency of fuel is measured by its octane number. Lower numbers have greater knock tendency; higher numbers have better knock control capability. Knock can be eliminated with proper octane rating.
