Resistance to Oil Degradation
XL synthetic motor oil maintains fluidity (viscosity) under the most severe conditions. Some oils break down and increase viscosity significantly after extended operation at high temperatures. These changes can cause excessive oil consumption, engine sludge, rapid wear, and difficult cold starts. The GM Oxidation and Sludge test (GMOD) uses a 5.7L V8 engine running at 293ºF (100º hotter than normal) for 100 hours. These severe operating conditions test the oil's ability to control viscosity increase, sludge formation, and oil consumption. Piston Protection Against Low-Speed Pre-Ignition

LSPI is spontaneous ignition of the fuel/air mixture before spark plug ignition. Most new engines feature direct fuel injection (GDI) systems, often combined with a turbocharger. These technologies increase the likelihood of LSPI events, which can destroy pistons and connecting rods. Properly formulated motor oil is critical for protecting your engine against LSPI.
