Preventing oil degradation
XL synthetic motor oil maintains fluidity (viscosity) under the most severe conditions. Some oils break down and increase in viscosity significantly after prolonged operation at high temperatures. These changes can cause excessive oil consumption, engine sludge, rapid wear, and difficult cold starts. The GM Oxidation and Sludge test (GMOD) includes a 5.7L V8 engine running at 293ºF (100º hotter than normal) for 100 hours. These severe operating conditions test the oil's ability to control viscosity increase, sludge formation, and oil consumption. Testing shows AMSOIL XL synthetic motor oil provides 64% more protection against oil degradation than required by GM dexos1® Gen 2 specifications, ensuring protection in severe temperatures.
Protecting pistons from low-speed pre-ignition
XL synthetic motor oil features unique chemistry proven to protect your engine against the damaging effects of low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI)*. LSPI is spontaneous ignition of the fuel/air mixture before spark plug ignition. Most new engines have direct gasoline injection (GDI) systems, often combined with a turbocharger. These technologies increase the likelihood of LSPI events, which can destroy pistons and connecting rods. Properly formulated motor oil is critical to protect your engine against LSPI.
