Vehicle engine oil leakage is a warning sign of many serious underlying damages
1. Causes of vehicle oil leaks
When you notice unusual liquid appearing under your vehicle, many people immediately assume it's an oil leak. However, this assessment is sometimes incorrect. You need to examine the characteristics of the leaking fluid to accurately identify the problem:
- If the fluid is green or pink in color and doesn't feel slippery to the touch, it may be coolant.
- If the leaking oil is pale yellow, it may be transmission fluid.
- If the oil is clear or pale yellow with high gloss and viscosity, it may be brake fluid.
- If the oil is red and feels slippery to the touch, it may be transmission fluid or power steering fluid.
- However, if vehicle engine oil is leaking, the fluid will be reddish-brown in color. Along with this, there may be other signs such as black smoke from the exhaust and a burning oil smell.
Once you've identified the leaking fluid as engine oil through these initial signs, you need to find the cause to remedy it promptly.
Below are some common reasons why vehicles leak oil:
- Rubber gasket aging and hardening: Rubber gaskets (valve cover gaskets) seal the connection points between the engine cover and block. After approximately 100,000 km of operation, gaskets will show signs of aging and hardening. This causes the engine cover to no longer seal properly, allowing engine oil to leak out.
- Loose bolts: Over time, bolts and screws tend to gradually loosen. When the gaps between joints become large enough, engine oil can easily seep out.
- Cracked or damaged oil seals: During operation, oil seals continuously experience pressure and temperature fluctuations. Consequently, after the vehicle has run for some time
