Changed the oil but the car still doesn't perform? 3 overlooked areas that need attention before Tet

Tet is approaching, and everyone wants their vehicle to run smoothly and powerfully for spring outings. However, a frustrating situation that many encounter is that after changing the oil, the vehicle still feels sluggish and lacks power, even after using the most expensive oil. This can lead to considerable discomfort and confusion.

In reality, no matter how good the oil is, it only addresses lubrication and cooling. If the components related to air intake, ignition, and power transfer are neglected, the vehicle's performance will remain stagnant. This article will highlight three often-overlooked hidden culprits that help you thoroughly address the issue of poor performance after an oil change, allowing you to enjoy Tet with peace of mind.

The phenomenon of poor performance after an oil change is often caused by three main factors outside of the engine: (1) A dirty air filter congests airflow, leading to a lack of oxygen and excess fuel. (2) Worn spark plugs weaken the spark, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion. (3) A worn or slipping clutch (for scooters) or chain and sprocket (for manual bikes) leads to power loss from the engine to the wheels. It's essential to inspect and replace these components alongside the oil change.

1. Dirty, clogged air filter

When the engine is clogged, no matter how good the oil is, your vehicle will remain sluggish and unable to operate at full capacity. This is the primary reason for poor performance after an oil change.

1.1. Why does a dirty air filter cause sluggish performance?

The engine requires a precise ratio of oxygen to burn fuel and generate power. Over time, dirt will fill the air filter's ventilation holes. This situation is akin to running while wearing a thick mask; the engine becomes suffocated.

When airflow is inadequate, the ECU (or carburetor) continues to inject fuel as usual, resulting in a rich fuel mixture with insufficient air. This mixture fails to combust completely, producing carbon build-up and reduced power. That's why you may feel that even after changing the oil, your vehicle is still sluggish, and it may even consume more fuel.

1.2. Signs of a clogged air filter and how to address it

If you notice black smoke from the exhaust, delayed acceleration, or the engine running hot, check the air filter immediately. Experts recommend replacing the air filter every 10,000 - 15,000 km. Do not resort to simply blowing away the dust, as fine particles can become embedded in the filter media, still causing the problem of poor performance after an oil
