Little-Known Facts About 20W50 Motor Oil

Little-Known Facts About 20W50 Motor Oil

Technical specifications are an important factor to consider when selecting the right lubricant for your vehicle. First and foremost is the SAE viscosity rating — a specification typically printed directly on the packaging near the brand name. In the tropical monsoon climate, a common engine oil is 20W50 or Repsol Rider 4T 20W50. But why is this product so preferred in Vietnam? Let's explore this product type!

1. What does the number 20W50 indicate?

First, let's understand what 20W50 means. Specifically, it's about analyzing the oil's viscosity at different temperature conditions.

20W50 is a designation that follows the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) convention for multi-grade engine oil, where 'W' stands for 'Winter'. The number before the W indicates the lowest temperature at which the engine can operate. The smaller the index, the thinner the oil will be at low temperatures.

Experts prefer thinner oil at low temperatures. Because even in harsh temperature conditions, the oil still circulates well in the engine, providing excellent engine protection.

To determine the exact minimum temperature the oil can withstand, we perform a simple calculation. Subtract the number before W from 35 to get the negative temperature. For example, with Repsol Rider 4T 20W50, we get 35-20=15. So the minimum temperature for the engine to operate is -15°C.

Meanwhile, the number after W refers to the oil's thickness when the engine operates under normal conditions. This index is also called operating viscosity. The higher this index, the thicker the oil becomes at higher temperatures.

Understanding SAE viscosity grades correctly is essential.

In summary, for 20W50 lubricants, the minimum temperature for engine startup is -15°C. The oil's thickness at operating temperature is 50. This is a relatively thick lubricant.

2. When should you use 20W50?

20W50 is a heavy-duty multi-grade engine oil with high viscosity. This type of oil is made from premium base oil combined with additives to provide better engine protection.
