1. Reasons drivers want to blend different oil brands

  • Cost-saving: 100% synthetic oil has quality advantages, while mineral oil has cost benefits. Therefore, it’s undeniable that combining these two types of oil can be more economical. In fact, this has been achieved with the presence of semi-synthetic oil.
  • Performance enhancement: Mixing a conventional oil with a superior oil, like 100% synthetic oil, can improve the performance of the old oil. However, the effectiveness of this will depend on the blending ratio.
  • Extending oil life: The life of the oil depends on the composition and blending ratio of the oils mixed together.
  • Easing the transition to new oil: Many believe that switching to a completely new oil can cause "shock" to the vehicle, so mixing new oil with old oil helps ease the transition.

Whether the resulting new oil will be beneficial depends on the type of oil and the blending ratio.

2. Is it advisable to mix products from different brands or quality levels?

In theory, mixing oils from different brands is entirely possible. However, if not done correctly, this could result in adverse effects, such as breaking down the oil structure. For instance, diluting AMSOIL with other brands can diminish their benefits and potentially alter their chemistry to a point where protection and performance are reduced.

When mixing oils from different brands, you must pay attention to the blending ratios. You should only mix products of the same type; for example, 4-stroke engine oil should not be mixed with 2-stroke engine oil, and hydraulic brake fluid should not be mixed with transmission oil.
