Should You Let Service Staff Choose Motorcycle Oil for You?

Should You Let Service Staff Choose Motorcycle Oil for You?

Although motorcycles are the primary means of transportation in Vietnam, many motorcycle owners do not pay much attention to changing the oil for their vehicles. Most of us, when looking to change motorcycle oil, let maintenance staff choose the oil instead of researching which type of oil is suitable. Is this safe?

Should you allow maintenance staff to choose motorcycle oil for you?

1. Fake oil and low-quality oil

In recent years, the domestic motorcycle market has flourished with a rapid increase in the number of vehicles. International oil brands have begun to enter Vietnam with various product lines to meet consumer demand. This has made the domestic oil market more dynamic, giving consumers more choices.

However, alongside quality products, there has been the emergence of fake and low-quality oil. Fake oil can be lower-quality oil filled into the containers of major brands to yield higher profits. Low-quality oil can sometimes be used oil, which performs significantly worse than new oil.

When changing oil, staff may take advantage of vehicle owners' trust and choose fake oil they have prepared in advance. Fake and low-quality oil cannot compare to genuine motorcycle oil. Its lubrication efficiency is inferior, generating more friction and lower durability, which can put significant pressure on the engine during operation.

Using fake or low-quality oil will have long-term negative effects on the engine.

2. Oil not suitable for the type of vehicle

As the number of motorcycles rapidly increases and many new models are launched, oil manufacturers have updated their products to be specialized for each motorcycle model. However, the choice of suitable oil is often overlooked, and even maintenance or cleaning staff may not be well-informed about the type of oil they are using.

Scooter engines, which utilize a continuously variable transmission with belts and dry clutches, operate at high RPMs. Choosing oil for scooters should focus on selecting heat-resistant and oxidatively stable types. Scooter oil generally has a low friction coefficient, complying with the JASO MB standard, and is often supplemented with additives to clean and maintain the engine.

Meanwhile, manual motorcycles will have JASO MA1 or MA2 standards. To avoid confusion when using inappropriate oil for your vehicle, you can purchase oil from reputable distributors and request the seller's advice before making a purchase.

Scooters require the selection of specialized oil to achieve the best performance.

3. Insufficient oil capacity for the vehicle

Another very important factor that is often overlooked by vehicle owners is the oil capacity specification. In addition to choosing the right oil type, you need to know the necessary oil amount for your motorcycle.
