1. How do used lubricants pollute the environment?
Motorcycle, automobile, and machinery lubricants are essential components of vehicle engines. However, used lubricants also pose significant environmental risks.
Lubricants contain numerous pollutants including: lead, cadmium, chromium, arsenic, dioxin, benzene, and polycyclic aromatic compounds. If engine lubricants are disposed of directly into the environment without treatment, they cause serious consequences such as:
- Polluting soil environments and disrupting existing microbial ecosystems.
- Contaminating water with heavy metals. Additionally, the oil film floating on the water surface blocks sunlight and oxygen, making aquatic organisms unable to breathe properly and causing them to die.
- Burning used motorcycle and automobile lubricants at low temperatures also produces toxic substances that harm the nervous, respiratory, and other systems of humans and animals.
