Expert Tips for Choosing Quality Oil for Manual Vehicles

With reasonable pricing, a sleek neutral design, and excellent fuel efficiency, manual motorcycles are among the top choices for Vietnamese customers. However, most manual motorcycle owners are unaware of the importance of selecting the right oil. Not only does proper oil provide maintenance, but it also helps optimize the performance of manual motorcycle engines.
If you belong to this group of customers, let's explore the following article to "take note" of some essential tips for choosing oil for manual motorcycles!

Manual motorcycles are among the most popular types of motorbikes in Vietnam.
1. Based on technical specifications
Each type of oil has different technical specifications to meet the operational needs of each type of motorcycle engine. Unlike scooters, manual bikes use a gear and wet clutch transmission system, so they require oil that isn't too thin to avoid clutch slipping and to maintain engine performance and lifespan.

Refer to the technical specifications on the oil bottle to choose suitable oil for manual motorcycles.
1.1 Should you use synthetic or semi-synthetic oil for manual motorcycles?
Synthetic oil (indicated on the bottle as 100% Synthetic or Fully Synthetic) consists of 100% base oil, offering high lubrication and excellent heat dissipation, which helps manual motorcycle engines operate smoothly and quietly.
However, this type of oil tends to be quite expensive and has lower compatibility with gaskets, meaning not all manual motorcycles can use it.

Not all manual motorcycles are suitable for synthetic oil.
Semi-synthetic oil (usually labeled as Semi-Synthetic or Synthetic Based) is a hybrid product between mineral oil and synthetic oil. This type of oil offers better lubrication compared to mineral oil but is cheaper, making it very popular today.
In summary, for newer manual motorcycle models, you should opt for 100% synthetic oil to extend the engine's lifespan. Conversely, if you're riding an older manual motorcycle, semi-synthetic oil would be a more economical choice.

Choose synthetic oil for new manual motorcycles and semi-synthetic oil for older models.
1.2 API and JASO ratings
API and JASO ratings are also important criteria to consider when selecting oil for manual motorcycles. Specifically:
- API: is the standard set by the American Petroleum Institute and is always followed by two characters (API SN, API CF…). The first character after API indicates the fuel type: the letter C is for diesel engines and S is for gasoline engines.
You should choose oil with an API rating of SL, SM, or SN to maximize engine performance.
- JASO is the Japanese standard for motor vehicles, which includes: JASO MA, MA
