Motorcycle batteries have 2 common types: wet batteries and dry batteries, each with their own advantages and disadvantages
1. Wet motorcycle batteries
Wet batteries or water batteries have a rectangular structure with internal compartments. Each compartment consists of lead plates and metal alternating with diluted acid solution and a screw cap on top. The acid used is H2SO4, which has high corrosive properties and an unpleasant odor. Direct contact should be avoided during use.
Wet batteries typically have 6 compartments, each functioning as a single battery connected by bridges. The negative terminal is marked (-) and the positive terminal is marked (+). Compartments have caps and ventilation holes. During operation, the battery generates hydrogen and oxygen gases that rise, causing the solution to bubble and gradually deplete.

Wet batteries require regular maintenance and water topping
To extend the lifespan of a wet motorcycle battery, regular maintenance is needed to ensure adequate solution level and the battery's discharge capacity. However, during use, you should not place the battery near electrical charging equipment because during charging, the battery heats up causing acid to evaporate, leading to corrosion of electrical connections, reducing lifespan or damaging the battery.
Advantages of wet batteries
- Strong electrical current output
- Simple structure, easy to disassemble and use for other electrical devices
- Can retain charge for extended periods without use
Disadvantages of wet batteries
- Requires regular maintenance and charging during use
- Produces unpleasant odor when charging
- Shorter lifespan than dry batteries
- Evaporated acid can corrode surrounding equipment
2. Dry motorcycle batteries - how much do they cost?
Dry batteries or sealed batteries came after wet batteries and improved their disadvantages with: longer lifespan, no need for regular maintenance or water topping. However, in essence, dry batteries still contain H2SO4 acid but in gel form rather than liquid solution.
