First Oil Change for a New Car at 1000 km: What is the Best Oil to Use?

First Oil Change for a New Car at 1000 km: What is the Best Oil to Use?

When purchasing a new vehicle, many people tend to focus on the brand, design, or convenience features, but overlook a critical factor: break-in oil. This is not just any lubricant; it is the first line of defense protecting the engine from silent damage during the initial 1000 km.

From over 10 years of experience in automotive maintenance and engineering, we have observed that 8 out of 10 cases of early performance reduction in vehicles are due to users neglecting the proper break-in process and choosing the wrong break-in oil.

1. What is break-in oil? Why should it not be overlooked?

Break-in oil is the type of oil used during the initial break-in period—usually the first 500 to 1000 km after leaving the factory. During this phase, mechanical components such as pistons, cylinders, camshafts, etc., despite being precisely machined, still require a certain amount of gentle friction to achieve optimal engagement.

The problem lies in the fact that this friction process generates countless tiny metal shavings. If not removed in a timely manner, these will act as steel sand, rubbing against the engine walls and silently causing severe wear.

Therefore, a good break-in oil not only needs to provide effective lubrication but also must wash away and hold onto the metal shavings, preventing them from circulating again.

2. What do experts say about when to change break-in oil?

According to recommendations from major brands like Yamaha, Honda, Ford, and technical documentation from SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), the first oil change should occur at 500 to 1000 km, depending on the type of vehicle.

  • Motorcycles: First oil change should be conducted around 500 to 700 km.
  • Cars: While some manufacturers stipulate the first change as 5000 km, experts recommend a change earlier, between 1000 and 3000 km, to ensure all metal particles in the combustion chamber are removed.

Delaying the break-in oil change could lead to early engine wear, causing oil consumption, overheating, or loss of power.

3. Technical considerations when choosing break-in oil

To choose the right break-in oil, three factors should be considered:

3.1 Viscosity Level

Prioritize thinner oils such as 5W30 or 10W40 to ensure quick circulation, penetrating small gaps, thereby optimizing lubrication and cleaning potential.

3.2 Type of Oil

  • During the break-in phase, it is not necessary to use expensive 100% synthetic oil.
  • Semi-synthetic oil or high-quality mineral
