Proper Usage of AMSOIL Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)

Proper Usage of AMSOIL Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)

The gearbox is one of the crucial components that directly affects a car's performance. Therefore, to ensure safe and effective operation, car owners should regularly check and change the oil in the gearbox.

ATF transmission oil is currently a popular choice for automatic gearboxes among car owners. So, how does this type of oil work? What are its advantages? Below are Huynh Chau's insights on this oil.

1. Distinguishing between manual transmission oil and automatic transmission oil.

Manual transmission oil and automatic transmission oil have distinctly different characteristics:

1.1 Manual transmission oil.

The manual gearbox operates based on a system of two shafts connecting gears meshing together through a rack and a clutch. Therefore, manual transmission oil needs to ensure a smooth shifting process to avoid damaging other components during gear changes.

  • High viscosity.

The most noticeable feature of gearbox oil is its viscosity. Compared to engine oil, manual transmission oil is much thicker. The average viscosity of engine oil is 5W-30, while for gearbox oil, it is 75W-90.

When viscosity reaches the standard, it ensures that all gearboxes are adequately lubricated. This particularly aids in cushioning the gears to prevent impact during operation.

  • Good heat dissipation.

During operation, significant friction occurs in the manual gearbox, generating a large amount of heat. Manual transmission oil will dissipate this heat away from the drivetrain, helping to reduce engine temperature, increase heat resistance, and preventing it from depleting too quickly or boiling too soon, allowing the vehicle to run longer.

  • Ability to operate under high pressure.

Manual transmission oil is often used in conjunction with extreme pressure additives to withstand the high pressures generated during vehicle operation. Notably, for concave gears, these additives keep the oil stable and functioning effectively.

Manual transmission oil has many advantages, from viscosity to heat dissipation.

1.2 Automatic transmission oil.

The automatic gearbox operates like a planetary gear system. The gears can automatically shift depending on the operational requirements of each engine in the vehicle. The gears in an automatic gearbox are typically smaller and have more movement compared to a manual gearbox.

Thus, the lubrication capability in an automatic gearbox differs from that of a manual gearbox. The fluid moving in the automatic gearbox not only needs
