Semi-synthetic lubricant is very popular in the market
1. What is semi-synthetic lubricant?
Today, there are many types of semi-synthetic lubricants widely used in the market. So what is semi-synthetic lubricant? Semi-synthetic lubricant is a type of oil that blends two types of lubricants: synthetic lubricant and mineral-based lubricant. When manufacturing this type of oil, there is no specified ratio between synthetic and mineral oil; each manufacturer has a different formula ratio, but typically, the synthetic lubricant comprises approximately 10% or more.
Specifically, mineral-based lubricant is produced by refining crude oil. Oil refineries distill crude oil to remove impurities and obtain pure hydrocarbon compounds to ensure lubrication properties for vehicle engines.
However, after a short period of time, the quality of mineral oil is no longer sufficient to ensure proper operation of machinery. Moreover, due to high viscosity, mineral oil moves through engines more slowly and is no longer suitable for modern vehicles that require high machinery performance.
In contrast, synthetic lubricant is artificially produced using technology that synthesizes short-chain hydrocarbon compounds into longer-chain hydrocarbons until desired lubrication efficiency is achieved. Pure synthetic lubricant is more powerful than mineral oil but has a significantly higher price.
For this reason, semi-synthetic oil was created as a combination of the advantages of mineral oil and synthetic lubricant, offering better lubrication capability compared to mineral oil suitable for complex engine lubrication applications while being more affordable than full synthetic oil.
Semi-synthetic oil has a longer lifespan than conventional mineral oil and provides suitable engine lubrication safely for approximately 8,000 miles.
