What is the warranty period for a motorcycle battery at the point of sale?

Motorcycle batteries currently come in two common types: wet batteries and dry batteries. Among these, dry batteries have more advantages and are used for newer automatic scooter models. However, because dry batteries come pre-charged, sellers may use old, previously used batteries for transactions.

Therefore, if your battery needs replacement, you should pay attention to the motorcycle battery warranty period at the sales point and only purchase from reputable dealers.

New motorcycle batteries have a lifespan ranging from 2 to 3 years

1. How long can a motorcycle battery be used?

Average battery lifespan

Previously, wet batteries (batteries with lead plates using diluted sulfuric acid solution) could be used regularly for around 2 years. More advantageously, dry batteries that came later have a lifespan of up to 3 years if properly maintained.

However, most battery retailers only warranty products for 6 months to 1 year from the date of purchase. On the other hand, the motorcycle battery warranty period also depends on the specific battery type.

Proper maintenance ensures battery lifespan

What should be done to extend battery life?

Due to their high capacity, wet batteries need regular maintenance to extend their lifespan by checking the electrolyte level and the battery's discharge capacity. Also, when using this type of battery, you should be careful to keep the starter away from the battery to prevent acidic vapor from affecting the welding joints, which weakens the starter and reduces discharge capacity, directly causing the battery to deteriorate quickly.

Unlike wet batteries, dry batteries require no maintenance and can be used immediately. The entire battery structure is in a gaseous state, so dry batteries are also called sealed batteries. The electrical conducting parts have good performance, so dry batteries have low internal resistance and high discharge capacity. Even if not used for long periods, dry batteries retain their charge and do not require additional charging.

How to recover dead or weak batteries

To check the battery's condition, we can examine its discharge capacity. Specifically, when the ignition is on but the engine doesn't start, the cause may be due to a weak or damaged battery, in which case it needs to be recharged using an external power source.
