The Relationship Between Lubricating Oil and the Environment: Don't Ignore the Impact Your Vehicle is Causing!

The Relationship Between Lubricating Oil and the Environment: Don't Ignore the Impact Your Vehicle is Causing!

The benefits of automotive lubricants and motorcycle oils to engines are undeniable. However, they also contribute significantly to environmental pollution. The negative impact of lubricants intensifies with outdated manufacturing technology, short oil change intervals, and brands that neglect social responsibility. In the article below, let us examine more closely the relationship between lubricants and the environment and why we should prioritize products that reduce emissions.

1. The relationship between lubricants and the environment

The properties of engine oil can affect emissions in several ways. In exhaust matter (exhaust components), heavy hydrocarbons derived from engine oil are the basic substances that form organic matter (OF) or organic carbon (OC) in diesel particles – particulate emissions that pollute the environment (black smoke from the exhaust pipe when the engine operates).

Another factor that can contribute to emissions is polymers with large molecular weights, such as viscosity modifiers. These are also a form of particulate emissions with significant environmental impact.

Measures to reduce emissions originating from lubricants, including both automotive and motorcycle oils, all come down to one point: controlling the engine's oil consumption through:

  • Engine design (which is what vehicle manufacturers are implementing)
  • Altering oil properties, such as lowering volatility temperature; improving oil compatibility to minimize leaks; stabilizing detergency/oxidation stability to minimize cylinder deposits.

Controlling oil consumption is an effective measure to minimize environmental impact

Besides upgrading engine design (which we cannot control), we can actively contribute to reducing the negative impact of vehicles on the environment by using high-quality automotive and motorcycle oils as well as changing oil regularly.

2. Choosing the right oil and changing it regularly to protect the environment

As mentioned above, choosing quality oil and changing it regularly is the primary measure to protect the environment. However, which oils should you choose and what indicators identify a sustainable product?

2.1 Components of lubricants that can affect the environment

To assess the impact of automotive or motorcycle oils on the environment, we should pay attention to the following factors:

Base oils

Base oils are the fundamental component of base stocks (oils
