Foamy Oil and Its Harmful Effects on Vehicles – How to Address the Issue

>>> Signs of Fuel Starvation in Vehicles and How to Effectively Address It
>>> When Should You Replace Motorcycle Tires and Key Considerations to Keep in Mind

The formation of foam in lubricants poses a threat to vehicles and equipment.
1. Foamy oil can cause problems for the engine
- Heat - Foam heats up to extremely high temperatures under pressure, creating steam in the oil. The foam then resolves the issue by forming an insulating layer that prevents heat from escaping. Thermal and water contamination limits the effectiveness of the lubricant.
- Wear - Since air is trapped within the oil, the lubricant becomes diluted and cannot properly lubricate the entire engine, leading to metal-to-metal contact that causes engine wear.
- Oxidation - Air trapped in foam promotes oxidation and shortens the lifespan of the lubricant.
2. Do additives in lubricants foam or resist foaming?

This foaming machine in a chemistry lab measures the anti-foam ability of the lubricant.
3. Testing the anti-foam characteristics of lubricants (ASTM D892)
4. Integrating anti-foam capabilities in lubricants
