A Guide to Distinguishing Between Synthetic Oil and Mineral Base Oil

Similar to tree resin supporting plant cells, lubricating oil is an essential lubricant that helps machinery in general, and motorcycle engines in particular, operate smoothly. To meet this demand, a variety of lubricant brands have emerged, offering a diverse range of products.
However, amidst this rich market, users often find it challenging to choose the appropriate oil as they may not fully understand the concepts, differences, and pros and cons of each type, especially synthetic oil and mineral oil. So, what are synthetic oil and mineral oil? What classifications do Repsol oil, Shell oil, etc., fall under? Follow the article below to care for your vehicle properly!

There are many types of lubricating oil in the market today.
1. Overview of synthetic oil and mineral oil
Just as blood circulation sustains each cell's function within the body, for vehicles and machinery, lubricating oil acts as the lifeblood that ensures their stable and safe operation. Typically, there are two main types of lubricating oil on the market: synthetic oil and mineral oil.
1.1 Synthetic Oil
This type of oil is used for high-end motorcycles and is regarded as the king of lubricants due to its composition of 100% base oil. The advantage of this oil type lies in its extremely high lubrication and excellent temperature regulation, helping equipment operate smoothly and prolonging durability. With optimized longevity, the vehicle or equipment will remain cool during use, thus saving costs on oil changes. However, this high-quality synthetic oil comes at a relatively high price and is selective about the vehicles it can be used in. Products such as Shell oil and Motul oil are examples of synthetic oils.

1.2 Mineral Oil
This oil is obtained through the distillation process of petroleum. It is characterized by a colorless and transparent appearance, consisting of alkanes and cycloalkanes. Since it is processed from crude oil and is extremely sensitive to ambient temperatures, mineral oil does not provide good lubrication and is unstable. This makes mineral oil prone to sludge formation and requires frequent oil changes. Despite these drawbacks, mineral oil has the advantage of being inexpensive, readily available, and suitable for many types of vehicles and equipment.
