• The octane rating commonly displayed on pumps at gas stations in North America is the average of the RON and MON octane ratings, calculated as (R+M)/2 for the fuel.
• This rating is determined through testing fuel using varying compression ratios under controlled conditions and is the most widely recognized rating in the industry worldwide. When comparing octane ratings, RON is often higher than the AKI rating, meaning that a regular 87 AKI octane fuel at a gas station typically has a RON of 91-92. • MON differs from the RON test in that it uses a preheated fuel mixture, with varying ignition timings and higher engine speeds to increase ignition pressure on the fuel. Although the tests are unrelated, MON results are usually 8 to 12 octane points lower than RON.
