The Impact of Octane Boosting Additives on Gasoline Engines

The Impact of Octane Boosting Additives on Gasoline Engines

Octane Rating: An Important Standard for Fuel Quality

The octane rating is an important standard measurement of fuel quality. Choosing gasoline with an inappropriately low octane rating can reduce engine performance and cause your vehicle to deteriorate and sustain damage quickly. In fact, the octane rating is one of the key metrics to determine whether gasoline is suitable for your vehicle. Today, the simplest way to increase the octane rating of gasoline is to use quality fuel additives. Learn more about how this works with Huynh Chau in the following article!

6 Tips to Maintain and Boost Power for Older Vehicle Engines

Octane Rating Indicates Anti-knock Ability and Fuel Performance

1. What is Octane Rating?

Octane rating is a standard that measures the anti-knock ability of fuel. The higher the octane value, the better the fuel resists compression and the more difficult it is to cause detonation. Based on this specification, we can determine whether the fuel is suitable and safe for your vehicle's engine. Generally, fuel with a high octane rating is compatible with engines that have high performance and high compression ratios.

2. The Impact of Octane Rating on Engine Performance

As Huynh Chau automotive lubricant has mentioned above, octane rating is an important fuel specification that significantly affects your engine's operating capability.

  • If the octane rating is high, gasoline will have a stable structure and pre-ignition (spontaneous detonation not triggered by spark plugs) is unlikely to occur. Conversely, using low-quality gasoline with a low octane rating can cause serious consequences such as:
  • Causing detonation and engine destruction.
  • Reducing vehicle power output.

Causing engine overheating and rapid damage.

Using low octane fuel can cause explosions and engine damage.

According to manufacturer recommendations, gasoline vehicles should use fuel with an octane rating of 87 or higher to ensure safety. For engines with high compression ratios and high performance, gasoline with an octane rating of 91–94 should be used, along with quality fuel additives to increase the octane rating and achieve optimal engine performance.
